When Marilyn first walked into Surgery Associates nine years ago, she had just received life-changing news: a breast cancer diagnosis. Referred by her gynecologist, she was introduced to one of our providers, Dr. Newt Harrison. He would not only provide guidance through her medical journey but also become a source of encouragement, prayer, and steadfast care.
“I am so glad she sent me here,” Marilyn shares. “He’s been such a godsend in my life.”

Facing Breast Cancer the First Time
Nine years ago, after her diagnosis, Marilyn underwent a mastectomy on her left side. It was a frightening season, but one marked by unwavering support. What stood out most to her was not just the skilled medical care, but the warmth of the team around her.
Marilyn said, “Every time I needed something, they were there. If I called the office, I didn’t get a machine. I got a real person who listened and helped me. That means so much.”
The Surgery Associates staff became a pillar of stability during an uncertain time. Their kind voices, caring attitudes, and reliable presence turned difficult appointments into moments of reassurance.

Second Diagnosis, Renewed Resolve
In late August of this year, Marilyn returned for her annual mammogram. The test revealed something unexpected. A biopsy confirmed the return of breast cancer, and once again, she faced another mastectomy—this time on her right side.
“The news was disappointing,” Marilyn admits, “but I wasn’t devastated. The Lord saw me through once, and I trust He’ll see me through again.”
Dr. Harrison’s presence brought calm. Before discussing next steps, he prayed with Marilyn. That gesture, rooted in compassion and faith, reminded her she was not walking this road alone.
“He was so positive and encouraging. He said, ‘We’re going to take care of this, we’ll do what we need to do.’ That gave me so much peace.”

More Than Medical Care
Through both diagnoses, Surgery Associates has been more than a clinic for Marilyn—they’ve been family. From scheduling staff to surgical teams, every person she encountered treated her with kindness and respect.
“I’ve never run across anybody who was grumpy or unkind. Everyone here is so pleasing in their demeanor. It may sound strange, but I actually enjoy coming here—even though the reasons aren’t always good. That’s how wonderful the people are.”

Encouragement for Others
Marilyn wants her story to encourage others facing breast cancer, especially those weighing decisions about surgery and treatment.
“If you’ve had a mammogram that shows something concerning, or if you think you may need breast surgery, I would encourage you to come to Surgery Associates. Dr. Harrison is so kind. I recommend him to everyone, and I know the other doctors here are excellent too.”
Her journey reflects not only resilience but also the profound impact of receiving care in a place where expertise and compassion walk hand in hand.
“Looking back over the past nine years, Surgery Associates has been the core of my care. From diagnosis, to surgery, to treatment plans—they’ve helped me with everything. And for that, I’ll always be thankful.”
